Ed Smith has worked as a medical herbalist for more than 30 years, as a practitioner, teacher and entrepreneur. His work and teachings incorporate the ancient wisdom of herbal folk knowledge with modern herbal science, and also express his love for nature and above all for plants.

In his ongoing search for herbal knowledge, Smith travels frequently throughout North America, Latin America, Europe, Africa, Asia, and the South Pacific seeking out medicinal herbs and knowledge of their health-promoting powers. It is this worldly perspective, this integration of old and new herbal knowledge, and his vast herbal experience that make him such a highly respected herbal teacher and resource to the naturopathic profession.

Smith is a co-founder and board member of the American Herbalists Guild, the Foundation for Natural Living and Pacific College of Naturopathic Medicine. He taught for 11 years at the California School of Herbal Studies and lectured at Hippocrates Health Institute.

In 1979 Smith co-founded Herb Pharm, based in Williams, Ore. His company has become the largest organic herb farm on the West Coast and the leading herbal extract company in the United States.

Smith joins the NCNM Class of 2013 on Saturday, June 29 as commencement speaker and fellow graduate. He will be awarded the degree Doctor of Laws, honoris causa (LLD).
