Paul Bergner

Paul Bergner is director of the North American Institute of Medical Herbalism in Portland, Oregon, where he offers seminar training in clinical skills, medical herbalism, nutrition and nature cure. He supervised a teaching clinic in medical herbalism and clinical nutrition in Boulder, Colo., from 1996 until 2013 and has published and edited the Medical Herbalism journal since 1989. He has studied and practiced natural medicine, medical herbalism and nutrition since 1973. He has authored seven books on medical herbalism, clinical nutrition, ethnobotany and naturopathic medicine.

Richo Cech

Richard A. (Richo) Cech has dedicated his life to finding, growing and disseminating seeds of medicinal plants, shrubs, vines, trees, and open-pollinated vegetables. He has botanized throughout the US, Canada, South America, Europe, China and Africa in search of native medicinal plants and has introduced many unique medicinal herb species to the US. Bevin Clare

Bevin Clare MSc, RH, CNS, is a clinical herbalist and nutritionist. She is an associate professor and program manager of the Clinical Herbalism program at the Maryland University of Integrative Health. She holds a MSc in Infectious Disease from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, serves on as an adjunct assistant professor at the Massachusetts College of Pharmacy and is an adjunct associate professor at the New York Chiropractic College. Bevin has studied herbal medicine around the world and blends her knowledge of traditional uses of plants with modern science and contemporary healthcare strategies. Bevin is the president of the American Herbalists Guild. She is founder of the Herbal Clinic for All program, providing cost-free herbal medicine healthcare since 2007. Bevin is a board member of the United Plant Savers, a group working to protect at-risk medicinal plants in North America. Sussanna Czeranko | Traditional Roots Conference | herbal conference in Portland
Sussanna Czeranko ND, BBE

Sussanna Czeranko ND, graduate of Canadian College of Naturopathic Medicine, is a licensed ND in Oregon.  She has developed an extensive armamentarium of traditional nature-cure tools for her patients. Especially interested in balneotherapy, botanical medicine, breathing and nutrition, she is a frequent international presenter.  As curator of the Rare Books Collection at NUNM, she is the author of the Hevert Collection, and has recently completed  Herbs in Naturopathic Medicine, Mental Culture in Naturopathic Medicine and Hydrotheraphy in Naturopathic Medicine, the  eighth, ninth and tenth books in that 12-book series. Sussanna founded The Breathing Academy, a training institute for naturopaths to incorporate a scientific model of breathing therapy called Buteyko into their practice. She will open her new naturopathic medical spa in Manitou Beach, Saskatchewan in 2019.

Catherine Hunziker is a senior professional herbalist with many years of experience in formulation and education in her field. She is the owner of Colorado-based WishGarden Herbs, a source of organic herbal remedies for over 35 years with a reputation for uniquely effective formulations.

Elise Krohn

Elise Krohn, M.Ed. is an educator, author, herbalist, and native foods specialist in Olympia, Washington. During her 18 years of experience teaching in tribal communities, she has worked with elders and cultural specialists to create community gardens, food sovereignty resources, a program on healing addiction and curricula on chronic disease prevention. Elise also has more than 10 years of experience as a clinical herbalist, and has authored two books and numerous articles. Currently, she is the Traditional Plants Program Director at Garden Raised Bounty where she is developing a K-12 curriculum on Northwest plants called Tend, Gather and Grow.

Greta de la Montagne

Greta de la Montagne RH (AHG), is clinical herbalist and bodyworker specializing in herbal first aid for 23 years. She operates Gentle Strength Botanicals & Massage Therapy near Arcata, California, where she blends Ayurveda and bodywork with clinical herbalism, and cultivates nearly all the medicines for the apothecary. She founded the MASHH (Medicine for All Seeking Health and Healing) Clinic Collective in 1996 during the struggle to defend Headwaters Forest and administered the first aid clinic at the 1999 WTO protests in Seattle.

Glen Nagel ND, RH (AHG)

Glen Nagel, ND has been a practicing herbalist for the last 30 years and a botanically focused herbal physician for 23 years. He has worked in the herbal industry as an educator and product researcher and formulator. He practiced clinical botanical medicine for 20 years including private practice and supervising herbal students. He also has taught botanical medicine at both Bastyr University and National College of Natural Medicine.

Sue Sierralupé is certified herbalist and clinic manager of Occupy Medical, a free, street-reach, integrated health clinic in Eugene, Oregon since 2011. She started The Practical Herbalist website in 2008 and began podcasting Real Herbalism Radio in 2014. She is the author of nine books.

Kevin Spelman PhD

Kevin Spelman Ph.D. is an expert on the molecular biology and clinical therapeutics of botanical medicines. A past Marie Curie research fellow in the European Union, and a National Institutes of Health postdoctoral fellow, he has published 27 scientific papers and six chapters. Dr. Spelman has also practiced clinical phytotherapy for two decades as well as advised the White House Commission on Complementary and Alternative Medicine. Past research has included the elucidation of various phytochemicals influencing molecular signaling in cellular systems, phytochemicals effecting brain and ovarian cancer, clinical investigations, immunological studies and chemical analysis on multiple medicinal plants. Dr. Spelman is an adjunct assistant professor at Massachusetts College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences, an adjunct professor of botanical medicine at National College of Natural Medicine and a distinguished lecturer at Maryland University of Integrative Health. Dr. Spelman is also a member of the prestigious College of Practitioners of Phytotherapy in the United Kingdom.

David Winston

David Winston, an internationally known lecturer, author and ethnobotanist, is the founder of Herbalist & Alchemist.

For almost 40 years, David has been studying, practicing, teaching and researching Chinese, Western/Eclectic, and South Eastern Herbal Traditions. David’s world-renowned two-year herbal studies program, the Herbal Therapeutics’ School of Botanical Medicine, has been educating herbalists, physicians, nurses, naturopathic physicians, veterinarians and nutritionists in the art and science of clinical herbal medicine since 1980.

David has one of the largest private herbal research libraries in the U.S. The Herbal Therapeutics Research Library has over 8000 volumes, from 1550 to present, and more than 15,000 articles on file. This library is a working library used for research for the herbal and nutritional industry as well as for his writing and for Herbalist & Alchemist.

David was one of the professional herbalists who founded the American Herbalists Guild, the first professional herbalists’ organization in the U.S., which certifies clinical herbalists. He is on the AHG’s professional membership review committee. David Winston has been on the Review Committee of the Botanical Safety Handbook, which produced a significant information resource, which the entire botanical industry, from manufacturers to researchers, relies upon.

He is the clinical herbal consultant to hundreds of prominent physicians (MDs, NDs, DOs, DCs) throughout the US, Canada and Europe. David has authored hundreds of articles and a number of books on herbs.

Eric Yarnell | Traditional Roots Conference | herbal conference in Portland
Eric Yarnell ND

Eric Yarnell ND, RH (AHG) graduated from Bastyr University in 1996, after which he completed a 2-year residency with master herbalist and physician Silena Heron ND in Sedona, Arizona. Dr. Yarnell served as chair of the department of botanical medicine at Southwest College of Naturopathic Medicine. He has served as senior and associate editor of the Journal of Naturopathic Medicine. He has been in private practice or supervising students since 1997 and is currently chief medical officer at Northwest Naturopathic Urology. Currently, Dr. Yarnell is associate professor at Bastyr University and adjunct faculty at SCNM. He is a co-founder and chief financial/operations officer of Healing Mountain Publishing and president of Heron Botanicals, Inc. Dr. Yarnell is author of numerous texts and articles.
